"However, the author of our painting presents us with a Christ bound and holding the "green cane," the scepter given to him to ridicule him. The association of this idea is typical of representations of Ecce Homo, that is, Christ alone in a devotional image and not inserted in a scene, to that of the Ostentatio Christi, which is the episode narrated solely in the Gospel of Saint John (19:6-13). (...). It is important to mention that this typology of Christ with the "green cane" is of Italian origin was formalized in the 15th century.(...). More curious, however, is the fact that the painter includes in this representation Pilate washing his hands, an episode mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew (27:24).  Dagoberto L.
