TERESA SOUSA - 1928-1962 "Visitação" coloured woodcut on paper unsigned Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - (mancha) 45,6 x 23 cm; (papel) 61,2 x 43,3 cm Notes: Despite her academic training in Painting, Teresa Sousa discovered her vocation for printmaking in Paris, on the recommendation of Vieira da Silva. Between 1955 and 1956 she studied with S. W. Hayter at the famous Atelier 17, a decisive and innovative experience at a time when artistic printmaking was undervalued in Portugal. Her first printmaking works, from 1956, using chalcographic techniques (burin, etching and mixed media, the latter a combination of two or more techniques), reveal the influence of Hayter and Atelier 17. However, Teresa Sousa also explored linocut, lithography, woodcut and serigraphy. Her training at Atelier 17 was essential for her recognition as a pioneer of modern Portuguese printmaking, consolidated with the printmaking prize she received at the 1st Exhibition of Plastic Arts of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1957, just two years after beginning her printmaking studies at Atelier 17. Between 1955 and 1961 she was a prolific and award-winning artist, but her premature death at the age of 33 cut short a promising career. She left behind several unfinished works and studies. Currently, the artist's children are promoting their mother's work and trying to re-establish her name in the Portuguese art scene, having so far managed to organize five exhibitions. “(Re)Descobrir Teresa Sousa.
