(1st quarter) relined, small restoration unsigned Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - 70 x 58 cm Notes: The only known portrait of Dona Francisca de Paula Possolo, a figure of importance in the Portuguese literary scene of the 19th century, whose work contributed to the affirmation of women's writing in Portugal. Regarding the iconography of Dona Francisca de Paula Possolo da Costa, noteworthy references include those made by Inocêncio Francisco da Silva in “O Panorama” (2nd series, vol. 2, Jan.-Dec. 1843, pp. 109–110), as well as by António Feliciano de Castilho, who, in a note to the “Notícia Literária” about Dona Francisca de Paula Possollo da Costa (May 1841), mentions the existence of two portraits of the aforementioned lady, both of great quality and likeness: one by Bento Dufourcq and another by Almeida Santos, a miniaturist and former state scholarship recipient at the School of Painting in Rome, this last one being one of the two portraits. The portrait now presented was exhibited alongside that of Dona Maria Ana of Austria at the Exhibition of Female Works, Ancient and Modern, of a literary, artistic and scientific nature, held in Lisbon, in the rooms of “O Século”, on May 17, 1930, at the initiative of the weekly “Modas & Bordados”, and was then the property of the Count of New Goa.
