TERESA SOUSA - 1928-1962 "Sagrado Coração de Maria" coloured lithograph on paper unsigned Dimensões (altura x comprimento x largura) - (total) 70 x 50 cm Notes: Despite having trained as a painter, Teresa Sousa discovered her calling for printmaking in Paris, recommended by Vieira da Silva. Between 1955 and 1956, she studied with S. W. Hayter at the renowned Atelier 17, a decisive and innovative experience at a time when artistic printmaking was undervalued in Portugal. Her first works, from 1956, reveal the influence of Hayter and Atelier 17, being executed in burin, etching, and mixed media. However, Teresa Sousa also explored linocuts, lithography, and woodcuts. Training at Atelier 17 cemented her recognition as a pioneer of modern Portuguese printmaking. Between 1955 and 1961, she was a prolific and award-winning artist, but her premature death at the age of 33 cut short a promising career. She left behind several unfinished works and studies. Currently, the artist's children are promoting their mother's work and trying to reestablish her name in the visual arts landscape in Portugal, having so far managed to promote four exhibitions: (Re)Descobrir Teresa Sousa. Gravura – 60 anos depois (National Library of Portugal, November 7, 2022 to February 25, 2023, and Évora Public Library, April 15, 2023 to May 20, 2023); Teresa Sousa – fragmentos de um breve percurso (UNESCO Centre, Beja, November 8, 2023 to December 29, 2023); Teresa Sousa (1928-1962) – Biografia Ilustrada (Onze Municipal Gallery, Setúbal, February 3, 2024 to March 9, 2024).
