Abbreviated translation of one of the most important works by Antonio de Herrera (1549-1625), historian and chief chronicler of Spain, who established himself until the 19th century as one of the main sources for the history of Hispanic conquests in the New World. The third volume was published 11 years after the other two and is considered much rarer. The collation of the three volumes or decades is as follows: I - [30], 776, [24] p.; II - [24], 748, [28] p.; III - [30], 790 p. Title and preliminary pages (of the three volumes) with some restorations; volume III presents the facsimile title page and the “Table des matieres” (6 f.) bound before the beginning of the text, when it should be at the end of the volume. Cesare Campana (1540-1606), Italian professor and historian, born in L'Aquila, focused mainly on the history of the Netherlands and Flanders. The work reports the siege that led to the capitulation of Antwerp (between July 1584 and August 1585, episode of the 80 Years' War), before the Spanish forces commanded by Alessandro Farnese (1545-1592), Duke of Parma and Placencia, husband of the Infanta D. Maria de Portugal, daughter of the Infante D. Duarte and granddaughter of D. Manuel I. Includes a large fold-out xilography, representing the siege, and two equally fold-out sheets: the first with the family tree of the counts of Flanders; the second, the tree of the principal lords of the Netherlands. Copy with several stamps from Casa de Cadaval, namely on the free end paper, on the title page, on the engraving and on the fold-out pages; unreadable old ownership, in the bottom margin of the title page. Otherwise, a very clean copy, with the engraving and the pages well folded. Good contemporary binding, full flexible parchment, with two glued labels and missing ties. Palau, 41128.

The author (ca. 1800-ca. 1870), an English painter and draftsman, traveled through Portugal, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Tangier and Scotland, where he collected compositions that were later set to stone, in this case by Charles Joseph Hullmandel, whose lithographic studio was active in London between 1819 and 1850. The title and footnote were taken from the cover of a brochure (certainly from one of the fascicles), which remains loose, with strong browning and a highlighted corner (the edition does not include a title page). The volume consists of: a paperback cover (top), a sheet with a dedication to William IV and 14 uncoloured lithographs, signed as follows: Drawn from nature & in stone by Wm. H. Burnett — Printed by C. Hallmandel. Includes the following prints: 1 - Cintra; 2 - Cintra from the East; 3 - The Market Place; 4 - Entrance to Cintra; 5 - The Convent of the Penha Longa; 6 - The Convent of N.ª S.ª da Penna; 7 - Cintra Overview; 8 - Cintra from the West; 9 - The Cork Convent; 10 - A part of the Palace; 11 - An old Chapel of the Moorish Castle; 12 - The Church of Cintra; 13 - A distant View of the Penna Convent; 14 - Entrance to the Penna. Disjointed and slightly handled volume, with three loose prints; some minor stains and slight foxing; last print with small tear, no lack of support. However, it is complete and recoverable. First of the three known works that came out of the press of Belchior Rodrigues (fl. 1588-1590), which António Joaquim Anselmo rightly considers to be a single typographic copy. On the last page, in fact, we find a collective colophon for the three titles. Slightly trimmed copy, with slight browning and light moisture stains (from the tide). Restorations on the lower margin of the title page, on pages Aa5, Aa6 and on the lower outer corner of the last page; traces of wormholes; occasional marginal notes of the time. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 1905 from the auction held in 1939/40). Full sheepskin binding, probably from the first half of the 19th century, preserving the marbled paper of the endpapers. Anselmo, 997. BN (16th century), 419, 422 and 424. Biblioteca de D. Album containing 50 captioned photographs (21x28 cm), mounted on 25 sheets of cardboard, representing aspects of the 1900 Universal Exhibition, which took place in Paris between April 14 and November 12, 1900, and is estimated to have been visited by more than 50 million people. The first photograph features, on the upper margin, the following dedication by Bernardino Camilo Cincinnato da Costa: Ao seu caro irmão Alfredo da Costa como recordação affectuosa da Exposição de Paris. Paris 15 Xbro de 1900. Off. o Cincinato. Copy a little handled and dusty; photographs with slight photodegradation; leaves with some spots and signs of moisture near the cut. Half morocco binding, gauffered on thefront cover, worn and with weak joints.

Friar Bartholomew of the Martyrs, O.P. (1514-1590), a prominent figure in the Portuguese Church of the 16th century, he stood out in the third and final session of the Council of Trent (1562-1563), having been archbishop of Braga between 1559 and 1582; in 2001 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II and in 2016, canonized by Pope Francis. Important and rare edition of his “opera omnia”, illustrated with a beautiful portrait that, curiously, has two signatures: Andreas Rossi Sculp. (who we assume was the subtitle writer) and Roccus Pozzi Sculp. (on the left of the image, close to the lower margin). Signed by the Italian engraver Rocco Pozzi (†1780), the two large copperplate vignettes on the two title pages, depicting the coat of arms of Portugal, are also signed. The collation of the two volumes is as follows. Tomus primus: [20], 246, [4], 249-469 [i. and. 473] p.: 1 portrait; Tomus secundus: [4], 465 p. The biography of Friar Bartholomew takes place between pages 1 and 108 of the first volume and includes a beautiful allegorical vignette at the beginning. Edition with excellent graphic quality, printed on high-weight paper. Ancient ownership on the first free endpaper and on the lower margin of the first title page: Monasterij Lisbonensis Ordinis S. Pauli Primi Eremita (with variants); inscription on the back of the same page: Purchased at the book auction of the Bibliotheca Publica de Lisboa in December 1864, B. dos M. Dias e Sousa. The copy, complete and clean, presents the following imperfections: pronounced trimming, evident in the two folds (lower and outer) of the engraving of the saint, but still preserving good margins; deep wormholes on the lower margin of sheets Yy 4 to Ddd4 of Volume I (21 sheets), affecting some claims; and on the upper margin of the last 20 sheets of the volume (smaller cuts). Contemporary binding, very damaged, with carmine edges, preserving the marbled paper of the endpapers. Barbosa Machado, I, p. 470.

Second editions of two of the most important texts by the great Portuguese humanist (1506-1580) who would become the last bishop of Silves (1564-1577) and the first of the renewed diocese of Algarve, in Faro (1577-1580). The first work, divided into five books, initially published in Coimbra in 1549, debates some of the major issues that concerned humanists in the second half of the 16th century; The text would achieve great success throughout Europe, having been reprinted at least 13 times during the author's lifetime. The second, initially published in Lisbon 10 years earlier, was dedicated to Infante D. Luís, fourth son of the second marriage of King D. Manuel I with D. Maria of Castile, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs; This second edition was preferred by Cardinals Bembo and Sadoleto. Both volumes feature the Medici coat of arms on the title pages. The first title page with old inscription, adding the title of the second work; some marginal notes and reading notes of the period, as well as on the endpapers. Occasional wet (tide) stains, but overall a clean, solid volume. Contemporary binding, entirely parchment, with some wear. The catalogue of the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II only mentions the first of the two works (622).

With the title “Flos Sanctorum Nuevo”, the Toledan Alonso de Villegas (1534-1615) composed his most popular work, inspired by those of Aloísio Lipomani (1500-1559), Laurentius Surius (1522-1578) and also by the “Legenda Dourada” by Voragine (1228-1298). The work, often reprinted, was first published in Toledo in 1578 (first part), with the author declaring that he had finished writing it on 6 January 1577. A copy of the work, with very special characteristics, from the first Portuguese edition, composed in two columns, illustrated with 19 xilographies, which rarely exceed half a page in size. It presents the following imperfections: frontispiece (printed in black and red) cut by the frame (xilographic fillet); six missing sheets: +2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (preliminary sheets) and last sheet (Hhhh7 or ¶1?), replaced by text typed in the third quarter of the 19th century, in the private printing shop of the Count of Azevedo; last five preliminary pages and first text page (A1), with the outer margins reconstructed; some minor, marginal wormholes, without affecting the typographic stain; rough restoration (without loss of support) on sheet yy8; acidity, occasional stains, some handling and excessive trimming, still retaining some margin. Stamps of the House of Azevedo on sheets +10v and A1r (lot no. 3529 from the auction held in 1921/22, with reproduction of the frontispiece). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 8058 from the auction held in 1939/40). Contemporary binding(?), entirely in sheepskin, restored in the 19th century(?), with the initials PROFF engraved in gold at the foot of the spine. Anselmo, 819. BN (16th century), 922. Biblioteca de D. Manuel II does not mention it. We are not aware of the existence of other copies of the same work and edition, apart from the three from BNP (all mutilated).

First Constitutions of Évora, still a Diocese, elevated to the dignity of Archdiocese only on September 29, 1540. The printing is of high quality, being, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and rare examples of Portuguese typographic art of the 16th century. The text is entirely composed in rotunda Gothic characters and includes numerous xilographyc capital initials. The last page includes a colophon in the form of two inverted triangles, indicating that printing was completed on the 22nd day of October 1534, by order of the Cardinal Infante of Portugal (D. Afonso), Archbishop of Lisbon. Incomplete copy, missing four pages from section g (g3 to g6, f. li to lv) which were carefully reproduced in pen; light trimming with minor damage to the xilographyc engraving of the title page, especially on the upper and lower margins; occasional ancient marginalia. Typographic label by Monsenhor Ferreira, on the back cover (with wormholes). Stamp of the House of Azevedo at the beginning of the prologue, last preliminary page (lot no. 853 of the catalogue of the auction held in 1921, which already mentions the four handwritten pages). Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 1906 from the auction held in 1939-1940). Otherwise, a clean copy, with good margins and unusual signs of provenance. Full flecked sheepskin binding, 18th/19th century, with minor damage to the foot and head of the spine and the carmine and waxed edges of the pages. Anselmo, 603. Gusmão, 282. National Library (16th century), 250 (a single copy, missing the title page). Not mentioned in the catalogue of the Biblioteca de D. Manuel II.
