Philippe Couplet (1623-1693), a Belgian Jesuit missionary born in Malines, left for China in 1656, working under the protection of Candida Xu (1607-1680), one of the most powerful women in China. After founding several churches in the Jiangnan region, Couplet returned to Europe accompanied by two Chinese converts, with whom he visited Italy, Paris, Berlin and Vienna. Illustrated edition with two fold-out copperplate prints, representing the subject of the biography and two Christian funerary crosses. Lightly trimmed copy, with slight browning, preserving the trimmed prints, but well folded. Ex-libris by Victor d’Avila Perez (lot no. 2189 from the auction held in 1939/40). 19th century binding, entirely fine calfskin, with a smooth spine decorated in gold and rolls on the squares.
