Imperial binding. KEMPIS, Tomás de - L'imitation de Jésus-Christ: latin text / suivi de la traduction de P. Corneille. - Paris: Impremerie Impériale, MDCCCLV [1855]. [14], 872 p; 45 cm – E. remarkable imperial binding in green morocco profusely decorated in gold with romantic blocking press tools; in the centre of both covers, on a gilt circle (Ø 8 cm) the imperial arms of Napoleon III of France in silver application; closed panels in gold on the spine filled with romantic tools, roll on the squares, double fillet in the thickness of the folders (filet de coupe), endpapers in marée silk and impeccably gilt egdes. Copy nº 9, from a limited edition of 103, with the following printed inscription: “offert par l’Empereur des Français a Sa Majesté D. Pedro V, Roi du Portugal e des Algarves”. The copy has the number 28200 on the back of the last endpaper, probably the entry record at the Royal Library; It also features the stamp with the crowned monogram DC, of King D. Carlos I of Portugal and the ex-libris of King D. Manuel II of Portugal. The edition of the best-known book on spirituality from the late Middle Ages was printed in typography and chromolithography, expressly for the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855. Spine with minor wear on the foot of page; occasional minor stains and slight browning.
