The author (1799-1848), English jurist and historian, born in Dartmouth (Mass., USA), was an officer in the British Navy between 1812 and 1816, after which he dedicated himself to the historiography and genealogy of the British nobility. His “History of the orders of knighthood...”, the first history of honorary orders in the United Kingdom, is considered a masterpiece of Victorian typography. The edition is illustrated with 27 separate chromolithographs and numerous figures in the text. Copy with some stains affecting mainly the prints of volume II. Contemporary sheepskin half-bindings with gilt edges; retains the original marbled paper endpapers and protective cases (recent). Percy Muir (Victorian illustrated books), p. 152.
