Second English edition of the much appreciated book by Koster (ca. 1793-1820), a British subject, born in Lisbon, having lived in Brazil, for health reasons, from 1809 onwards, where he was “senhor de engenho”. The collation of the two volumes is as follows: I - X, [2], 406 p.: [6] engraving, 2 folding maps; II - IV, 330 p.: [2] engraving. Complete copy, containing the map of the port of Pernambuco, the map of the captaincy and the eight uncoloured aquatints, representing, above all, traditional customs, a mill and aspects of the author's journey. Slightly cropped copy with very slight browning, but generally clean. Heraldic ex-libris of William Scott Kerr, of Chatto (Scotland). Half-leather contemporary bindings, with slightly worn spines and weak joints (upper side of the first volume almost loose). Sabin, 38272. Borba de Moraes, p. 437.
