MANUSCRITO.- ARRAIS, D. Frei Amador, O.C.C.- Bula do Papa Gregório XIII, confirmando a eleição de D. Frei Amador Arrais para Bispo de Portalegre.- Século XVI (1581).- 1 f. (pergaminho); 35x48 cm. D. Friar Amador Arrais (ca. 1530-1600), religious of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, born in Beja, a figure of great intellectual stature in the 16th century, orator of very high eloquence, author of the famous "Dialogues", published in Coimbra, in 1589, a significant milestone in Portuguese Counter-Reformation literature. Friar Amador was a royal preacher, assistant to Cardinal Henrique, bishop of Tripoli and Portalegre. Original bull (manuscript on parchment) of Pope Gregory XIII, confirming the election of D. Friar Amador Arrais as Bishop of Portalegre (leaving the diocese of Tripoli, of which he was titular bishop), a position he held between 1581 and 1596, the year of his resignation. Document dated from Rome, at Saint Peter's, on the third day before the kalendas of November 1581 (that is, November 30, 1581), with three signatures (probably from the prefect and/or secretaries of the Congregation of Bishops, or equivalent). On the verso, it presents the following summary: Bulla da Promoção de D. Amador Bispo de Trípoli p(ara) Bispo de Portalegre pello Papa Gregorio em o ano de 1581 em o ano decimo do seu Pontificado, remetida a Fellipe 2º em posse deste R[ei]nº. Document slightly faded, flattened, framed (between two glasses), missing the pending seal(s), retaining traces of the silk ties; small faults in the folds and some stains, without prejudice to the reading.
