Numerous references to Cuba, Argentina, Peru, Guatemala, Venezuela, etc. Las Casas (1474/84-1566), an indefatigable fighter against the oppression of American Indians, considered a precursor of abolitionism, in addition to having been bishop of Chiapas (Guatemala), he was a protege of Cardinal Cisneros who appointed him Universal Attorney and Protector of the Indians and obtained from Charles V several legislative measures for their protection.
