JOÃO DE BARROS - 1496-1570
Segunda decada da Asia (Second Report of Asia)
The Second Report from Asia by João de Barros of the deeds that the Portuguese made in the discovery & conquering of the seas and lands of the Orient. | . | ¶ Printed by Germão Galharde in BARROS, João de (1496-1570).-Lixbon: on XXIII. days of March of m. d. Liij. [1553].-[2], 143 f.; 37 cm.-E. A working copy of the first edition of the second report of Asia by João de Barros, exits of the presses of the printer Germão Galharde, of French origin, with typography in Lisbon between 1519 and 1561. The edition is entirely composed in rotunda gothic characters, with renaissance woodcuts initials, on paper of high grammage and of great format. In fact, with the exception of the initial booklet, which is in-folio, all the rest are eighth (the latter only has seven sheets), which implies a size larger than 74x104 cm. per sheet of printing, unusual for the time, in Portugal. The imperfections of greater significance are as follows: preliminary sheets [1 and 2] photocopied; L. 1 (A1): severe restoration with loss of text; L. 2 to 4: minor marginal restoration; L. 41 and 48: shorter bottom margin (of another copy?); L. 112, 113, 132: Restoration in the lower outer corner, with loss of text; L. 133: restoration in the upper outer corner, with loss of text (preceded by photocopy of the same sheet); L. 140 and 141: shorter top margin (of another copy?); L. 136 to 143: restoration in the lower outer corner, with loss of text); The sheets 142 and 143 are preceded by photocopies of the same sheets. A trimmed copy with acidity and occasional loss of current titles and foliation. Occasionally moth cuts on the lower and inner margins, sometimes restored, which rarely reach the text. Foliation errors: l. 49 instead of l. 53; l. 73 instead of l. 75; L. 97 instead of l. 100. Very recent entire calf binding. The collation exactly corresponds to the descriptions of the following references: Azevedo-Samodães, 335. Anselmo, 648. Library of King D. Manuel II, 50. BN, 71.
