Father Lafitau (1681-1746), a Jesuit priest, scientist and missionary, stayed six years in Canada where he studied the Iroquois Indians. He also discovered ginseng. An illustrated edition with 14 intaglio (taille-douce) engravings and a folding map , mainly depicting views of squares in Africa and India, particularly Goa, Daman, Diu, Chaul, Bassein, Mombassa, Quiloa, Sofala, etc. It also includes several allegoric vignettes of fine quality.
