The Author (1798-1882), French naturalist and painter born in Lyon, remained in Brazil for two years (1858 e 1859) and painted a portrait of the Imperial Family. During his stay, he collected species of animals, insects, reptiles etc. The work is illustrated by 180 woodcut engravings, within the text and separately, performed by Édouard Riou according to originals by the Author.
