The first French translation of this appreciated travel book, whose author (circa 1793-1820), also known as Henrique da Costa, son of an English sugar merchant, of Liverpool, was born in Oporto. Very young, Koster traveled to Brazil, where he lived most of his life, engaging in the cultivation and export of coffee. In the preface of his work we can read: «...la langue portugaise m’est plus familière que celle de mon pays... les avis et la grande bibliothèque de M. Southey m’ont été d’un grand secours».
