A Pair of Vases, porcelain, blue and gilt decoration, polychrome reserves "Birds, flowers” and inscription in French alluding to Gama Machado, bronze and gilt bases en relief, French, 19th C., dated 1843 notes: José Joaquim Gama Machado (1775-1861), noble of the Royal Household and Commander of the Order of Christ, was an advisor to the Legation of Portugal in Paris and corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. He was an eccentric and a scientist. Having lived in Paris from 1806 until his death, he devoted himself to the study of Natural history in the last years of his life and published between 1831 and 1858, the work in four volumes "Théorie des Ressemblances", to witch decoration of these vases alludes.
