"Project to the fountain of do Passeio Público of Rio de Janeiro - Brasil, ink and watercolor on paper, Brazilian 18th C. (4thquarter), datable circa 1783, paper with restored tear not reaching the drawing, small humidity stains, small defects Notes: this drawing was part of a two drawings, of which the other one is in a Portuguese private collection, with only minor differences, but it has a key to their identification and dating, specifically, the coat of arms of Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, 4th Earl of Figueiró, Brazil's Viceroy and Governor of Rio de Janeiro between 1778 and 1790. This coat of arms is placed in a necklace that adorns the neck of the allegorical figure of Brazil. This is one of the projects requested in 1783, or the year before, to Rio's artists for fountains that should adorn the Public Promenade, built in a landfill at Largo do Boqueirão, work begun in 1783. The project belonged to Mestre Valentim, although we cannot guarantee that this drawing is of his own, despite having done projects for various fonts and fountains. This fountain represents the "Brazil", in the form of native woman, supported by an "Armillary Sphere", symbolizing the dominion of the Portuguese Crown over the territory, resting on two alligators of whose mouths water springs. The entire set features many exotic aspects: parrot feather skirt and headdress, parrot, pineapple, waterfall, etc.. The other drawing shows the fountain's "bowl" round fountain, not polilobbed, slight differences in detail and quoted necklace with the coat of Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa. We do not know if these two projects came to be executed. However, the "Fountain of Love" which still can be seen in the Public Promenade at Rio de Janeiro, has a polilobbed tank with the shape of this design, water also flows from the mouth of two alligators and also has a massive rocks. The top is a construction or composition in the neoclassical taste, from the first half of the nineteenth century, which seems to be replacing an original composition, possibly one that is represented in this drawing. Integrated the estate of Professor António Nogueira Gonçalves. Cabral Moncada Leilões is grateful to Professor Pedro Dias for the research and all the information provided, as well as the permission to transcribe it in this catalog.
