Henri l’Éveque (1769-1832), viajante, pintor, aguarelista
e gravador suiço, natural de Genève, esteve várias vezes em
Portugal, tendo registado graficamente, entre outros temas,
numerosos episódios das Invasões Francesas.
O seu Costume of Portugal é considerado o mais belo livro
de costumes portugueses publicado durante o século XIX e uma
importante fonte para a iconografia do traje português do seu
tempo. Sem folha de rosto, que nunca chegou a ser impressa,
a edição é constituída por uma folha com o título, seguindo-se
uma outra com a dedicatória impressa ao conselheiro, ministro
e secretário de Estado António de Araújo de Azevedo, primeiro
conde da Barca (1754-1817) e ainda uma terceira folha com o
índice das gravuras em língua portuguesa (estas segunda e
terceira folhas estão em falta no presente exemplar, como,
aliás, em muitos outros). Seguem-se 50 águas-tintas, numeradas,
coloridas à mão, intercaladas por 52 folhas com textos bilingues,
em inglês e francês, descritivos das respectivas imagens.
As estampas encontram-se muito limpas e bem conservadas;
a gravura nº 39 com a margem exterior um pouco mais curta.
Ex-libris de Mário Carmona. Meia-encadernação de chagrin
marron, de feitura recente, com elaborada decoração

painter, watercolourist, traveller and writer, a native of Geneva, has been several times in Portugal, graphically recording, among
others, numerous episodes of the French invasions. Its Costume de Potugal is considered the most beautiful book of Portuguese
customs published during the 19th century and an important source for the iconography of the Portuguese outfit
of its time. No cover leaf, that was never printed, editing consists of a leaf with the title, followed by another with a printed
dedication to counselor, Minister and Secretary of State Antonio de Araújo de Azevedo, 1st Count of Barca (1754-1817) and a
third leaf with the index of the engravings in Portuguese (second and third leaves are missing in this copy, as indeed in many
others). Followed by 50 numbered, hand coloured aquatints, interspersed by 52 leaves with bilingual texts, in English and
French, descriptive of their images. The engravings are very clean and well preserved; engraving No. 39 presents the outer
margin a little shorter. Ex-libris of Mario Carmona. Recent half brown chagrin entire binding with an exquisite gold decoration
