Segunda edição (a primeira é de 1702) de uma obra inteiramente gravada a talhe-doce,
que reproduz fielmente e ao pormenor a Coluna de Marco Aurélio (121-180) erigida na
Piazza Colonna (entre 176 e 192?), em Roma, para comemorar as vitórias do imperador
sobre as tribos germânicas da região Norte do Danúbio. Em 1589, a estátua de Marco Aurélio
foi substituída pela de S. Paulo que hoje podemos encontrar no topo da coluna.
As gravuras foram abertas em chapa de cobre segundo desenhos do artista, historiador
e biógrafo romano Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696). A edição, impressa em papel de
elevada gramagem, foi dedicada ao papa Clemente XI, e é constituída por um rosto e uma
dedicatória gravados e 80 gravuras (numeradas de I a III e de 1 a 77). Exemplar completo,
muito limpo e com boas margens, revestido de meia-encadernação de marroquim,

entirely intaglio engraved, reproducing faithfully and to detail the column of Marcus
Aurelius (121-180) erected in Piazza Colonna (between 176 and 192?), in Rome, to celebrate
the victories of the Emperor on the Germanic tribes of the region North of the Danube.
In 1589, the statue of Marcus Aurelius was replaced by St Paul which we can find today
at the top of the column. The engravings were opened on copper plate according to the
drawings of the artist, Roman historian and biographer Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696).
The edition, printed on paper of high weight, was dedicated to Pope Clement XI, and
consists of engraved face and dedication and 80 engravings (numbered I to III and 1 to 77).
Full copy, very clean and with good margins, 19th century half Morocco binding.
