Edição original de um dos primeiros relatos feitos por uma testemunha ocular da exploração das minas de ouro e diamantes do Brasil.
John Mawe (1764-1829), negociante, viajante e geólogo inglês, natural de Derby, viajou entre 1807 e 1810 pelo Brasil,
tendo sido recebido pelo príncipe regente que o autorizou a visitar as minas de ouro e diamantes de Minas Gerais, onde Mawe
permaneceu durante dois anos. A obra rapidamente adquiriu grande popularidade tendo sido traduzida para francês, sueco, alemão,
holandês e português. Das nove gravuras a talhe-doce, a penúltima, representando minerais recolhidos pelo autor, é colorida à mão.
Exemplar com alguma acidez e ligeiro offset das gravuras sobre as páginas opostas (como acontece na maioria dos exemplares).
Folha de rosto com imperfeição central (sem falta de suporte), apresentando indícios de carimbo circular apagado no verso,
provocando alguma abrasão, disfarçada por ex-libris coroado (conde de Paraty), colado sobre a imperfeição. Ex-libris heráldico inglês
(Mary Bryant Sprague) na contra-capa. Encadernação da época, inteira de carneira. Meia-encadernação de pele, da época,

Original edition of one of the first reports made by an eyewitness of the exploitation of the gold and diamond mines in Brazil. John
Mawe (1764-1829), trader, traveller and geologist, born in Derby, traveled between 1807 and 1810 through Brazil, having been received by
the Prince Regent who authorized him to visit the gold and diamond mines of Minas Gerais where Mawe stayed for two years. The work
quickly gained large public acceptance having been translated into French, Swedish, German, Dutch and Portuguese. Of the nine intaglio
engravings (en taille-douce), the last but one, representing minerals collected by the author, is coloured by hand. Copy with some acidity
and slight offset of the engravings on the facing pages (as happens in most copies). Cover page with central imperfection (no lack of
support), showing signs of deleted circular stamp on the back, causing some abrasion, disguised by crowned Ex-Libris (Count of Paraty),
pasted on the imperfection. British heraldic Ex-libris (Mary Bryant Sprague) on the back cover. Binding of the time, entire calf. Half-
leather binding, of the time, somewhat fatigued.
