The author, whose secular name was Manuel Gomes Freire, was natural of Estremoz and was chronicler and vicar general of the Order of Discalced Augustinians. Complete set of a work of great breadth and erudition that includes news about the images of the Virgin all over the country and area of Portuguese expansion, with important references to the topography, history, missions and local life. While the first seven volumes are dedicated to Portugal, the eighth refers to Japan, China, Macau, Goa, Daman, Diu, Bassein, Chaul, Southeast Asia, Philippines, Mozambique, Angola, Morocco, etc.., being that the last two volumes are almost entirely dedicated to Brazil, also including references to the Azores, Madeira, Sao Tome and Principe and the Canaries. The volumes are lightly trimmed with carmine leaf cutting; have some acidity, sometimes strong in the first two volumes, cover pages sometimes with spots that indicate elimination of manuscript ownership marks; occasional minor bookworm cuts. Complete Collection of a publication, devoted exclusively to articles and documents of a historical nature, whose foundation was due to D. José Pessanha and Anselmo Braamcamp. Printed on linen paper, its circulation was limited number of copies and included collaboration of the leading figures of the time, linked to historical research of which we highlight, beyond the founders, Sousa Viterbo, Pedro de Azevedo, Costa Lobo, António Baião, J. Lúcio de Azevedo, Gomes de Brito, Edgar Prestage, Carolina Michaelis, Júlio de Castilho, etc. The set includes the rare volume XI that was never completed, with 288 pages (no frontispiece), to which were added photocopies of pages 289 to304. Volumes 1-5 with the stamp of Adolpho Loureiro at the frontispiece. Ex-libris of Francisco de Saldanha Ferrão Castelo Branco. Exemplar lightly trimmed, but clean, chagrin half bindings with gilt work at the spines (volume II binding slightly different).

The second part includes 13 colored aquatints, with military uniforms Spanish (5), Portuguese (6) and French (2). The engravings confer exactly with the index. The fourth and last volume of this known dictionary of marine (the remaining three volumes are text), containing 115 to intaglio prints (17 leaflets), related to the text through an index and covering the general aspects of boating activity, particularly vessels, many parts of the world, different types of sails, rigging, shipbuilding, armaments, etc.. To emphasize the representation of 21 Portuguese river vessels and coastal sailing vessels: Catraio, cacilheiro, frigate, sloop, mullet, dinghy, batel, powerboat, saveiro, etc. Exemplar slightly trimmed, but still with good margins.
