The author, whose secular name was Manuel Gomes Freire, was natural of Estremoz and was chronicler and vicar general of the Order of Discalced Augustinians. Complete set of a work of great breadth and erudition that includes news about the images of the Virgin all over the country and area of Portuguese expansion, with important references to the topography, history, missions and local life. While the first seven volumes are dedicated to Portugal, the eighth refers to Japan, China, Macau, Goa, Daman, Diu, Bassein, Chaul, Southeast Asia, Philippines, Mozambique, Angola, Morocco, etc.., being that the last two volumes are almost entirely dedicated to Brazil, also including references to the Azores, Madeira, Sao Tome and Principe and the Canaries. The volumes are lightly trimmed with carmine leaf cutting; have some acidity, sometimes strong in the first two volumes, cover pages sometimes with spots that indicate elimination of manuscript ownership marks; occasional minor bookworm cuts.
